Top 5 upcoming PSP games of 2009

August 22, 2009

Personally I think that the PSP has had some great titles and is a pretty good piece of kit. You can download games, play music, watch videos, look at pictures and all of that so as a media player it’s pretty impressive. However I’m here to talk about the games. There have been some great games on the system so far such as God of War: Chains of Olympus, Patapon, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and plenty more. 2009 looks to bring even more great games to the system so this list will pick out five of the best looking games for the rest of the year.

5. Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines

Now the first Assassin’s Creed was a decent game. It had great ideas but some poor execution and even though the gameplay was great at the start, it got repetitive quickly which just made it boring. What it needed was variety. Fortunately though Assassin’s Creed II looks like it is taking the great groundwork of the first game and expanding upon it to make a great game. From what we have seen of Bloodlines it’s hard to tell whether it too will add upon the first game in the same way but I can’t imagine why not. Ubisoft are putting a lot of work into Assassin’s Creed 2 and I think they will be doing the same for Bloodlines.

4. Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny

Kratos Soul Calibur

Namco have already shown that they can make great beat em’ ups on the PSP with Tekken: Dark Resurrection so I have high hopes for Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny. It is supposed to be taking quite a lot of features, including the great character creation, from Soul Calibur IV. The gameplay looks just like the Soul Calibur we have all grown to love but this time it’s on a smaller screen. There are about 30 characters in the game, including some new ones and some old ones. One of the new characters is Kratos from God of War who will obviously be able to kick some ass. Broken Destiny is looking to be a great game for the PSP that will really suit the system.

3. LittleBigPlanet

LBP PSP

If you have played the PS3 LittleBigPlanet you will know that it’s something special. It’s really fun and some of the levels are absolutely fantastic. The PSP version is looking like it will deliver a game of the same quality. Even with the PSP’s limitations compared to a PS3 they have managed to put loads of features in the portable version straight from the console version. It may be losing some features, such as the multiplayer, but it’s still going to have loads in it to keep you playing.  The game should suit the PSP really well too. The gameplay would be great on the move and it looks like making levels will also work well on the PSP. This is going to be a great game that I can’t wait for.

2. Gran Turismo

 Gran Turismo PSP

I’m not a big racing game fan to be honest. I play them occasionally and when I do play them it’s not for very long and I don’t do well. However the PSP version of Gran Turismo is looking so good that it deserves to be in this list. The sheer amount of features and cars is incredible for the PSP. There will be over 800 cars in Gran Turismo which is pretty damn impressive for not only a PSP game but for any racing game. Graphically it is one of the best on the system by quite a bit and it runs at 60 FPS. Some console games don’t run at 60 FPS! The only complaint I can give is that only 4 people will be racing at a time but when you consider how much is in the game you can’t really complain. For racing game fans that own a PSP this is looking like an essential purchase.

1. Dissidia: Final Fantasy

Dissidia Final Fantasy

I’m a big fan of Final Fantasy so there are good reasons for me to get excited over this. This isn’t sticking to the traditional Final Fantasy formula and is instead more of a fighting game with RPG elements. This is not a bad thing though as it looks and plays fantastic. Nearly all of the characters in the game are either heroes or villains from previous games. The fights in this are supposed to resemble the ones in Advent Children. From what I’ve played they’re damn close.  It is fast and frantic, you will diving through the air to you enemy, running across walls, jumping around, dodging and doing so pretty cool attacks. It captures the Final Fantasy feel perfectly with some great music from many of the games. Dissidia: Final Fantasy always looked good and from what I’ve played it’s fantastic. This looks to be an essential for Final Fantasy fans.

  4. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep hasn’t got an official release date yet so it’s not on the list. I am looking forward to it though. I’m also looking forward to Tekken 6 but I wanted to stick to PSP exclusives.
